This short, silent film captures one of Britain's minor little railways: the Leek and Manifold Light Railway on the Staffordshire Moorlands. The railway opened in 1907, linking the villages of Waterhouses and Hulme End, and was built mainly for agricultural traffic, with a passenger service being a secondary consideration. Its route went through beautiful countryside in Staffordshire, and it is unfortunate that the intertitles state it as being shot in Derbyshire! In 1934 the entire line was closed by the North Staffordshire Railway. See the Nilgiri Mountain Steam Railway, in Tamil Nadu, India. The Journey ends at Coonoor - 28km, 5616ft - main intermediate station on the line to Comatore from Ooty. Coonoor is at the site of the locomotive workshops as well as the top end of the rack rail. Trains must reverse a short distance before continuing their climb to Ooty. My 6th visit to the Paignton & Dartmouth Steam Railway, 'The Nations Holiday Line' on Wednesday 13th August 2008. Now I know a hell of a lot of enthusiasts are against the P&DSR, saying that they don't keep locomotives in original liveries along with naming them, using coloured lights etc, but I think the P&DSR GWR liveries are better than the GWR real ones, come on, your saying 'Lydham Manor' looks rubbish?, and do the signals really matter? So if you hate it so much why do they keep going there? - because you know its one of the best lines in the country. The views are superb of Torbay, the sea and of the River Dart. The Kent & East Sussex Light Railway. known in it's first few years as the Rother Valley Railway, was opened between 1903 and 1905 and ran from Robertsbridge on the Tonbridge-Hastings line to Headcorn Junction on the South Eastern main line. The line became part of British Railways upon nationalisation in 1948 and, in common with many similarly unprofitable rural branch lines was steadily run down, closing to passenger traffic on 2nd January 1954 (at which point the section from Tenterden Town to Headcorn Junction was closed altogether) and to all traffic on 12th July 1961.
